Here's a little bit of history. If you look at the picture below of Mad Woman Jackie (seriously -would you tackle Jackie the MW armed with a sledge hammer) attacking concrete and compare it to that above the big difference is the original stone flagged floor is visible (it was hidden under 2 layers of solid concrete). So here's an interesting connection about this floor that ties in nicely with a little trip we just made over this weekend.
Today we nipped down to London (2hrs by Train at £12). Its our second visit to the Noel Coward theatre to watch the Michael Grandage Company series of plays. Last month it was Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw in "Peter and Alice". This month its Daniel Radcliffe in the "Cripple of Inishmaan". I'll cover the plays in a seperate blog entry but back to the point.
The connection is the flagstones. The Rossendale Valley was one of the most important stone producing areas at one time especially renowned for its flagstones. Imagine my surprise to learn that Trafalgar Square is covered almost entirely in Rossendale flagstone. Now in case your wondering everyone of our flags will have to be taken up (they weigh a ton as they are several inches thick) because they are simply laid on earth and we have to insulate the ground and reinforce with steel and concrete. Flags will then be relaid in the kitchen and hallway starting this week.
